A Blog could be described as an "online diary" where you can post anything, from your favourite movie review to the latest news in the world. Every time you submit a post to your diary, this gets automatically organized in chronological order and added to your archives. Blogging systems let visitors search these archives by date and leave comments on the posts. These online platforms make it the finding and sharing of information so easily accessible to everyone that it has already become one of the most popular ways to have an online presence.

Among the most famous Blogging platforms are Blogger, Tumbl, Typepad and Wordpress. They offer you a free service that you can start using immediately after signing up in their online platforms. You don´t need to have any special knowledge, let alone be an HTML or PHP expert. There are no limitations in the length of your posts, and you can include as many images, videos and widgets as you like. They usually offer you templates to customise the look of your blog. However, how you organise the information within your "online diary" is entirely your responsibility. Once you create a Blog you become the webmaster of it, that is, a "Blogger".

On the other hand, if you want flexibility in content and require further services, Blogging may not be for you or at least not as a standalone solution. The only possibility to take a Blog a step forward is having some Coding Knowledge. A website, however, leaves the space open to fully customization.

Bloggers who share common interests usually exchange links. This links are usually made public and placed in a sidebar, in what is called a "Blogroll". This is an effective way to indicate the popularity of a blog. The more it appears in other people´s Blogrolls the more popular it is. Nevertheless, this is not the only way of communication between Bloggers.

Trackback is a special way of sending notifications about relevant information to another Blogger. For example, you find a blog with a review about a product that you bought last week. You reckon that the writer has missed some important points and you decide to jot them down in your blog. In that case, you can send a Trackback to that Blogger to notify him that you are going to write a similar post, but adding a few more points. Everybody seeing that posts from then on also gets notified about the updated information in your blog.

PingBack is a special way of being notified about anyone linking to a post in your blog. This is a popular way of keeping track of who is linking or referring to your posts. Automatic Pingbacks are usually supported by most Blogging Software.
